VW Van on Tow Truck

Don’t let this happen to you!

We work on hundreds of vans each year and we always see a spike in broken-down travelers this time of year. For the most part, the breakdowns require fairly easy repairs and we can usually get you back on the road the same day, but sitting on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere waiting for a tow truck can certainly spoil a vacation.

Most breakdowns can be prevented by simply getting your vehicle into the shop a couple of weeks before your trip for a simple service and vehicle inspection. Because it is typically warm in the summer, it is extremely important to get your cooling system checked out, especially if your vehicle has been sitting for a long period of time.

It’s common that vans sit for a majority of the winter. If your van is in this category, we highly recommend driving your van daily for a couple of weeks prior to your trip to insure that everything is functioning properly.

If you can’t find the time to get your van into the shop prior to leaving for a trip, here is a list of things you need to check:

  • Engine oil level
  • Brake fluid level
  • Coolant level in header tank (In Engine Compartment) always check when vehicle is cold
  • Coolant level in overflow bottle (Behind license plate on Vanagon)
  • Windshield washer fluid
  • Wiper blades
  • Tire pressure, including spare tire
  • Is your tool kit in the van? (Jack, lug wrench, etc.)
  • Automatic transmission fluid level
  • You should always carry a couple of quarts of oil and water for emergencies
  • It is also a good idea to carry road flares just in case
  • Make sure your belts are not cracked or frayed
