1986 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

Price: $13,500

There are lots of vans out there for sale, but a good van at good price can be hard to come by. We got this van in a couple of months ago and just simply drove it around for a couple of weeks to make sure that the van didn't have any problems. We gave the van a thorough inspection and found that it didn't really need much attention.

We really didn't have to do much but this is what we did:

--Service A/C system
--Full tune up
--Oil change
--Brake fluid flush

Work that had been done before we purchased vehicle (receipts available)

--16-in wheel set from GoWesty
--New radio antenna
--New curtains
--New ignition coil
--New radiator, fan switch, and hoses
(All of the above work was performed by us on 9/17/12 at 185,781 miles)

--R&R cylinder heads replace gaskets and rebuild heads (AMC cylinder heads)
--New A/C compressor and receiver dryer
(All work done on 6/17/09 at 180,608 miles)

--New catalytic converter and oxygen sensor
(Work done on 3/1/10 at 183,710 miles)

--Replace upper ball joints
--Replace thermostat and housing
--Replace heater valve
(Work done on 9/28/10 at 186819 miles)

New battery on 2/5/13 by AAA

Upgrades and work that has been done that we have no receipts for:
--The engine appears that it might have been rebuilt at some point but hard to say for sure without receipts
--3-window pop top tent
--Pop to lift assist struts
--Stainless steel coolant pipes and distribution pipe
--Newer alternator and starter
--All brakes 90% life left
--Retractable shoulder strap rear seat belts
--KYB shock absorbers all around

The bad things about this van:
--The automatic transmission is leaking. It is not a major leak but something that would probably need to be topped off at the same time as routine oil changes. As of right now, the transmission shifts great and is having no problems and could potentially go this way for years but hard to know.
--This van has a salvaged title that appears to be from a minor front-end collision that CARFAX reports from 2008.
--There is rust around the windshield in the typical areas.
